A tour of Saint Catherine’s

Welcome to Saint Catherine’s Church

The front door with a hexafoil image of a dog

The exterior of the Church is built from Newry Granite with dressings of Dungannon stone.

A fine example of Dungannon stone dressing with a hexafoil depiction of a hound surround by the rosary above the main door.

Blessed Jordan of Saxony  O.P., the first biographer and successor of Saint Dominic, relates that before Saint Dominic’s birth his mother, Blessed Jane of Aza, had a dream or vision.   In this vision she  bore in her womb a dog carrying a burning torch  in its mouth. Leaping from her womb the dog seemed to set the earth on fire.

Our Stained Glass Windows

The Dominican is decorated by a wonderful collection of stained glass windows which illuminate the Church. As you look towards the altar, behind and above it at the back of the apse three remarkable women are depicted.

On the left is Saint Mary of Magdala holding a skull symbolising her profound repentance, contemplative life and mortality.

In the centre is Saint Catherine of Siena wearing a crown of thorns holding a book overlain with a crucifix symbolising her mystical marriage and stigmata as well as her saintly wisdom, a Doctor of the Church.

On the right is Saint Catherine of Alexandria, virgin martyr, depicted with a spiked wheel on which she was to be executed.

Two other saints are depicted in stained glass just out of view. That is until you get closer to the sanctuary. On the left of Saint Mary of Magdala is a depiction of our founder Saint Dominic de Guzman O.P. On the right of Saint Catherine of Alexandria is Saint Thomas Aquinas O.P.

Saint Thomas Aquinas O.P.

Saint Thomas Aquinas is depicted with an open book with the Latin phrase “QUOT ARTICULOS TOT MIRACULA”, that is, “HOW MANY ARTICLES SO MANY MIRACLES”, words believed to have been spoken by Pope John XXII who canonised Saint Thomas in 1323, with reference to the many articles Saint Thomas wrote in his famed Summa Theologica implying that every article is a miracle.
